The Palacio de los Deportes de Riazor, a rink with skate hockey flavor

On the verge of half a century of operation since its opening on August 1, 1970, the Palacio de los Deportes de Riazor de A Coruña, located on Manuel Murguía’ Street next to the Estadio Municipal de Riazor and forming part of a set of municipal sports facilities, will host for the first time a European Men’s Roller Hockey Championship. However, the A Coruña rink, now deeply remodeled since 2011, has already hosted two World Championships in that sport, in 1972 and 1988, but with which it also has a special link to being the place where the Hockey Club Liceo disputes its games.

Precisely in that month of August of 1970 the inauguration was carried out with a game of roller hockey that faced Spain with a team formed by players from the rest of the world and that ended up with victory of the Spanish team by 4-2.

The rink on which this 53rd European Men’s Roller Hockey Championship will be played is parquet floor and has dimensions of 40×20 m, with a capacity for spectators, all seated, of 4400 seats. In addition to roller hockey competitions, the Palacio de los Deportes de Riazor has been the scene of important events such as the Copa del Rey in several editions.
